Hoe Drogen Mijn Keuken (en Leven) Veranderde.

How Dry-Aging Changed My Kitchen (and My Life).

How I started dehydrating fruits and vegetables (and why I'll never go back)

It's funny how some things start without you really having a plan. My journey with dehydrating fruits and vegetables actually stemmed from something very simple: I wanted to reduce waste and eat healthier — for myself and my family.

What started as a small experiment with a cheap dehydrator has ultimately grown into something I do daily. And yes, even into Mayns Organic.

The moment I decided to start

I noticed that fruit often lingered in the fruit bowl. Apples that became a bit too soft, bananas turning brown, vegetables in the fridge that didn't make it to the end of the week… You might know the feeling.

One day I thought: surely there's another way?

I was looking for a way to make healthy products last longer without artificial additives. That's when I discovered dehydration. And honestly: I never expected it to be so much fun and so addictive.

My very first attempt (with mixed success)

My first experiment was with zucchini and apple.
The apple went great — such a delicious sweet smell throughout the house.
The zucchini… let's just say I didn't quite know how thin to slice it or how long it needed back then. But even those failed slices felt like a victory.

Because I thought: if I can improve this, I can do so much more.

Then I got the itch

I bought better organic products, learned more about temperatures, slicing thicknesses, and drying times. Every batch got a little better. And my children were my taste testers. If they didn't like it, I knew enough.

And soon they started asking themselves:
“Do you have any more of those dried strawberries?”
“Can I have those crispy carrots in my lunchbox?”

That really gave me a boost to keep going.

From hobby to passion

At one point, my dehydrator was running almost every day. I started making mixes, testing combinations, and increasingly enjoying the process. It felt calming and creative — like making something special with very simple means.

Moreover, I noticed:

  • less waste

  • more variety in our snacks

  • healthier choices that happened naturally

  • children eating more vegetables without a fuss

Then the idea began to grow to do more with it.

How Mayns Organic came to be

I wanted to share my love for dried fruits and vegetables. Not as a "perfect parent," but as someone who tried something small and found it worked. And that others might also benefit from it.

I started making small batches, experimenting further, and slowly the plan for my webshop emerged. Organic, pure, and dried with love — exactly as I do it at home.

Mayns Organic is essentially an extension of my own kitchen table.
A place where I show what's possible with simple, healthy ingredients.

Why I'll never go back

Dehydrating fruits and vegetables has truly changed things in my household.

It provides:

  • healthy snacks without a struggle

  • less food waste

  • always something in the house

  • children eating more fruits and vegetables

  • a sense of calm and control

And honestly: it's simply delightful to do.

In conclusion

What started for me as a curious experiment has grown into a passion — and a way of life. And the great thing is: anyone can do this. Whether you start drying yourself or use dried products, it simply makes your life a bit easier and healthier.
